finally recommending some of my favourite queer books for #pridemonth!! i tried to include books of all genres, so hopefully there's something here for everyone. like i said, these are all some of my favourite books, which means ive read and loved them all, and which also means im highly recommending all of them. 🙌
"We are frenetic with hunger, with wanting, with the repentance of the season. We laugh like hyenas, our heads thrusting forward from our bodies."
"I said that I had to leave to discover things about myself. I withheld the fact that there wasn't much to discover. Just ordinary surface and, beneath that, more desperate surface."
THIS BOOK. Not to be dramatic but just thinking about it makes me want to weep. I know “beautiful” is a really easy word to throw around when it comes to describing books, but Devotion is one of the few novels that truly deserves it. Hannah Kent’s writing is mesmerizing: her imagery is unreal, and the way she writes atmosphere and details and characters is just brilliant. Honestly I’m frustrated because I don’t know how to convey to you how good this book is. It’s the kind of novel that feels so raw: you feel every single emotion these characters feel, and you feel them SO keenly. Devotion is a novel that’s in a league of its own.
The stories of Where the Wild Ladies Are are filled with all sorts of fantastical things: ghosts, frog guardians, and hauntings aplenty. Different as they may be, though, these things come together beautifully in Matsuda's hands.
White Ivy is a book that I INHALED. Every platitude about propulsive books applies here: I couldn't put it down! It kept me up all night! I couldn't wait to find out what happened next! I couldn't stop turning the pages! (except I listened to the audiobook so maybe this one doesn't quite apply). It was a page-turner in every sense of the word.
